1. What is Integral Seeing?

There’s a particular kind of bewilderment abroad at the moment, sharpened since the pandemic. It isn’t just that politics is mad, the media is shallow and institutions are wobbling. It’s the quieter sense that the way we’re looking at the world no longer fits what we’re actually living.

Integral Seeing starts here.

It’s not a new ideology, a self-help method or a spiritual brand. It’s a way of naming and training our seeing – the underlying lens through which reality shows up for us.

Most of the time, we assume that the world is simply “out there” and we just form opinions about it. Integral Seeing suggests something more demanding: that how we experience the world depends on deeper structures of consciousness – patterns of perception that have evolved over human history and are currently colliding in us and around us.

On this site we call these structures magic, mythic, mental and integral. You don’t need to memorise them. The point is simpler:

  • Different ways of seeing create different worlds.

  • Those worlds can’t be argued away with facts alone.

  • Our current crises are, in part, crises of seeing.

What this site is – and isn’t

This site is for people who sense that:

  • The usual left/right, secular/religious, “rational vs irrational” arguments no longer get to the heart of things.

  • Culture wars feel like symptoms of something deeper, but it’s hard to name quite what.

  • Spiritual and psychological language sometimes helps, but often just adds more noise.

You’ll find:

  • Contemporary critiques – pieces that look at politics, media, culture wars and institutional collapse through the lens of structures of consciousness.

  • Underpinnings – essays that slowly build the framework: what we mean by myth, the imaginal, participation, field, and so on.

  • Practice and experiment – simple ways to notice your own patterns of seeing in daily life.

You will not find:

  • A five-step plan to fix the world.

  • A new theory to believe instead of the old ones.

  • A demand that you sign up to a tribe, movement or ideology.

Why this matters now

We are living through what feels like overlapping breakdowns: of trust, of shared reality, of meaning. One reaction is to cling harder to existing frameworks – more data, more control, more outrage, more purity. Another is to abandon the whole thing and numb out.

Integral Seeing offers a different move: to become conscious of the structures that shape our seeing, to notice when we are captured by one, and to learn how to stand in a different relation to them.

In practical terms, that means:

  • Recognising when we’re locked in mental analysis, trying to solve everything like a technical problem.

  • Seeing when mythic energies – stories of good and evil, purity and contamination – are running the show.

  • Noticing the magical impulse – the hunger for immediacy, fusion, “vibes” – in everything from conspiracy theories to wellness culture.

  • Learning what it might be to stand in a more integral stance: present to all these layers without being swallowed by any of them.

How to use the site

You don’t need to read in order or agree with everything.

A sensible route might be:

  • Read the short pieces on structures of consciousness and myth/story/narrative.

  • Read one or two concrete critiques – on media, politics or culture – and see if the lens clarifies anything.

  • Try one or two simple practices: ways of listening, walking, or paying attention that shift your mode of seeing.

If you come away with fewer certainties but a clearer sense of what is actually going on in you and around you, Integral Seeing is doing its job.
