“That which is below is like that which is above, and that which is above is like that which is below, to accomplish the miracles of the One Thing.”

This isn’t about astrology, or outer space, or heavenly hierarchies. It’s a cosmological statement—a metaphysical axiom that reality is mirrored, patterned, and participatory. It’s the core of the Hermetic worldview: all levels of being reflect and interpenetrate one another. Microcosm and macrocosm. Inner and outer. Soul and cosmos.

Not Correspondence, but Participation

Modern minds tend to interpret this as “symbolic correspondence.” That is: the stars mean something for my psyche. The moon rules emotions. A tarot card represents an archetype.

But for Hermetic thinkers, this was not analogy—it was ontological reality. The human being is not like the cosmos. We are the cosmos in miniature. What happens in one realm reverberates in another, not metaphorically, but actually.
